Weekly Snippet #33: Unfair Advantages, and Acceptance.
Why couldn’t I have started earlier? is a question we often ask when we see someone more successful than us. It's all about understand the unfair advantages others have over us and us over others.
Why couldn’t I have started earlier?
When I first started college, I noticed that I was surrounded by many people who were way ahead of where I wanted to be, some already knew coding, others had done some internships, and meanwhile, I was figuring out how important those things actually are.
It didn’t end there, even through the years that I got through. There was always someone who was better than I was and had a head start when they were 14 years old. It sometimes got frustrating, and most of the times very disappointing not because there was someone better, but because of a simple question, “Why couldn’t I have started earlier?”.
This did put a pause on me for sometime, and only after speaking the same with my juniors and the people who I thought were “better” than me, it came to understanding that there will always be people around you with unfair advantages.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing, and neither does it have to be a good one. It’s just what it is. Everyone has different situations that they come from and that does play a big role in how they turned to out to the person they are today.
For me, I came from background where all my family members are in the medical industry and I am the first one to get into tech, I had zero guidance, knowledge and no support (in terms of mentorship) when I begun my journey in tech in 2020.
And for someone else, they might already be coming from a family where their parents, siblings and relatives might be in the field, so they got an idea from them and did get an earlier start.
Comparison is the thief of joy.
The idea that came for me, to be able to focus on myself and not on others is to accept that unfair advantages do exist and that it’s not under my control, so why bother stressing yourself over it. Everyone has a different path and things that they’re working on, and so do I.
Take things at your own pace, keep learning and growing for what you like to do, not what you see others doing around you.
